The Rennes Institute of Chemical Sciences (ISCR) is pleased to welcome in Rennes Marc Baaden (Institut de Biologie Physico-Chimique, Paris) on Thursday, september 3, 2026. The conference will take place at 11:00 am in Grandjean Amphitheater , building 10B, Beaulieu Campus.
Abstract
Across living systems, membrane channels and pores move water and metabolites with remarkable selectivity. Chemists have learned to mimic these architectures with artificial water channels, biomimetic systems that promise a better understanding of natural transport and new routes to selective separation. Making sense of how they work, however, demands heavy computation: molecular dynamics simulations that resolve the subtle interplay of confinement, dynamics and energetics inside the channel. he will show what such simulations reveal, and where they reach their limits. He will then turn to how they explore these molecular worlds.
Using the UnityMol framework, built on a game engine and coupled to display walls and virtual-reality headsets, they turn static structures into interactive, immersive experiences, in the lab and the classroom alike. Heavy computation today, immersive exploration tomorrow: two complementary lenses on the same molecular question.
